Kandy

Kandy, often referred to as the “Hill Capital” of Sri Lanka, is a historically and culturally rich city located in the central part of the island. This picturesque destination, nestled amid lush hills, offers a combination of cooler climate, stunning landscapes, and a vibrant cultural heritage.

Kandy enjoys a temperate climate, characterized by mild temperatures throughout the year. Daytime temperatures typically range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F to 86°F), making it a pleasant escape from the tropical heat of the lowlands. Kandy’s weather is ideal for exploring the city’s outdoor attractions and enjoying the scenic beauty of the surrounding hills.

The city is most famous for the Sacred Tooth Relic Temple, also known as the Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa). This UNESCO World Heritage Site houses a revered relic believed to be a tooth of Lord Buddha. The temple is not only a religious and cultural landmark but also an architectural marvel, featuring intricate woodwork, golden roofs, and a serene lakeside setting.

Kandy Lake, also known as Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk, is a stunning artificial lake in the heart of the city, created by the last Sinhalese king, Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe. The lake is encircled by a picturesque promenade where visitors can take leisurely walks and enjoy scenic views.

Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, located a short drive from the city, is a renowned botanical haven featuring an impressive collection of exotic plant species, stately trees, and colorful orchids.

The nearby Knuckles Mountain Range offers a range of outdoor activities, including hiking, birdwatching, and exploration of rural communities. The region is known for its biodiversity and pristine wilderness.

Kandy’s cultural ambiance extends to its annual Esala Perahera, a grand religious procession that takes place in July or August. It’s a vibrant and elaborate pageant that parades through the city, celebrating the Sacred Tooth Relic.

Kandy’s temperate climate, rich history, and natural beauty make it an exceptional destination for travelers seeking a blend of cultural exploration and serene mountain surroundings in the heart of Sri Lanka.
